about

Sylvain Holtermann is a French photographer born in Nepal in 1970. He started taking pictures at an early age with a Kodak Pocket Instamatic and developed a passion for photography and darkroom techniques  as a teenager. These days were also marked by important encounters with photographers such as Bernard Plossu who played an important role in shaping his approach to photography.

At the age of 18, he left France for China with a hundred rolls of Tri-X pan films from a Kodak grant and spent two years in Beijing as a student. In the following years, he participated in group and solo exhibitions in France and China and collaborated with magazines. In 1994, he was invited to the Young International Photography Festival in France. He also travelled extensively in Europe and Asia and ran creative projects, teaching pinhole photography to children.

Sylvain Holtermann settled in Hong Kong in 1995, where he has been living ever since. Using film and digital photography, his works explore a variety of common and unfamiliar territories through a poetic gaze largely influenced by the works of painters. Apprehending photography as a direct yet introspective experience, he mostly works with small-format cameras. He also likes to experiment with alternative processes.
